Treat Your Mother to Gifts from Ashley Thomas
By Josie Mills
Ashley Thomas, surface pattern designer, creates beautiful homewares in her own unique style. All of Ashley’s stunning designs start with an illustration or painting which she then digitally manipulates to get the products ready for printing. It is this dedication to the hand-drawn/hand-painted element in her work that makes her products so special. Ashley’s cushions, tea towels and other homewares retain their character and charm which so many digitally generated pieces of design lose. Her collection, made with love, would therefore make a perfect gift this Mother’s Day.
One of Ashley’s favourite products is her Sky’s the Limit Cushion, which features a trio of hot air balloons flying over a little town inspired by the quote; “The sky’s the limit”. A limited-edition cushion, it is made to order which makes every one of them special. Each one is handmade by Ashley with her sewing machine with her signature rosette. All Ashley’s designs are limited edition pieces that make great gifts for special people in your life. Not mass produced, but handmade in England, they cannot be bought from the high street which makes them incredibly special.
Ashley’s new collection of Embroidery Hoops have just been launched on the E-Shop. Made as wall art her Bees Knees Embroidery Hoop features a hand-painted design with the quote "You are the bees knees". It is digitally printed on to 100% cotton and framed in a lovely vintage style embroidery hoop, perfect for adding a fun touch to an empty wall space.
Ashley’s tea towel Baked with Love was inspired by her own love of baking. This tea towel tries to capture that passion of baking with illustrations of ingredients in a little messy baking scene. A memory most people can share is baking with their mum as a child, which makes this tea towel a great gift for Mother’s Day!
Ashley can thank her father for her passion of designing and making as it was he, as a talented fine artist, that inspired her to create her own business. A rounded designer, Ashley has tried her hand at fashion, fine art, silver-smithing and crafts until she found her real love of printed textiles.
After graduating with a degree in Surface Pattern Design from Staffordshire University, Ashley worked on a freelance basis for a variety of card companies. It was after working for these companies that Ashley decided to launch her own business in 2008 which she continues to grow and develop her range of popular designs.
